(AP) - Thousands of students in Florida and many others at dozens of high schools across the country have walked out of class to protest gun violence and to honor the victims of last week's massacre in Florida. Some of Wednesday's protests lasted 17 minutes in honor of the 17 people killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland. Impromptu planning for demonstrations stretching from Arizona to Maine was shared on social media.
ALLIANCE, Ohio (AP) - Police have arrested five Ohio high school students for a school shooting plot that the students claim was a joke. Authorities say the five Alliance High School students, all freshmen, were overheard discussing their plan by other students. Police arrested the students Wednesday and charged them with a misdemeanor of making a false alarm.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - A candidate for state treasurer says the office should determine the impacts of prison privatization on Ohio taxpayers. In a letter issued Wednesday, Democratic Cincinnati attorney Rob Richardson asked Republican State Treasurer Josh Mandel to conduct a fiscal and economic impact study into Ohio's prison system. Richardson is an attorney and former board University of Cincinnati board chairman. He faces businessman Neil Patel in the Democratic primary. A message was left at Mandel's office.
CLEVELAND (AP) - The federal agency that maintains shipping channels along Lake Erie has settled a lawsuit with the state of Ohio over the dredging of Cleveland's harbor. Cleveland.com reports the settlement revealed in a court filing Wednesday requires the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to cover the cost of placing sediment from the harbor into containment dikes in 2016 and 2017. A spokeswoman for Ohio's environmental agency says they are happy to put the dispute behind them.
